The Future of Online Therapy

DeeAnna Nagel

Saturday Morning Only

The Internet isn’t replacing old-fashioned, direct, face-to-face conversation in therapy, but online technologies are already extending and changing our practices. . . .

E-mails, podcasting, chat rooms, videoconferencing, and texting are being adapted for therapeutic use. Then there are more exotic possibilities: avatar therapy can free clients to express fantasies, transferences, and projections that they may feel too inhibited about in conventional therapy. Gaming can engage children and adolescents who have trouble expressing themselves in words. But all these new possibilities have potential risks for ethical violations, privacy breaches, confusion, hurt feelings, and even retraumatization of vulnerable clients. In this workshop, we’ll look at the more widely used forms of “Internet-assisted therapy,” along with some of the more sophisticated applications, and explore the possible benefits, risks, and ramifications that accompany the use of these new technologies.

Clinical Supervision Services for New Jersey and Georgia

Online Peer Supervision

If you are an online counselor and you are interested in online peer supervision, consider subscribing to the Online Therapy Institute’s consultation forum which is moderated by DeeAnna Merz Nagel and Kate Anthony.

Clinical Supervision

I am qualified as a clinical supervisor in the states of Georgia and New Jersey. Clinical Supervision in Georgia is conducted via technology. My office is in New Jersey and for New Jersey supervisees I conduct clinical supervision in my office with occasional support via technology.

Group Supervision

I am available for in-office clinical group supervision for up to 6 people. Group sessions are generally 60 minutes with 2-6 supervisees in attendance.

Scheduling

If you wish to schedule an in-office appointment, please call me at 1.877.773.5591.

About my qualifications as a clinical supervisor

I am qualified as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) clinical supervisor in the states of Georgia, New Jersey and New York.   I am an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) through CCE/NBCC. I am a member of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES). I have conducted face-2-face clinical supervision for many practitioners seeking licensure. I also offer my expertise to  practitioners who may benefit from a either a one-time consultation or frequent supervision in addition to any supervision they may need to fulfill licensure requirements. My theoretical foundation is psychodynamic but I pull from other theories and techniques as beneficial and necessary for the supervisee and client.

I advise all supervisees to consult with their jurisdiction with regard to licensure requirements. Obtaining supervision or consultation online will add to your professional growth and development.  The online experience will not necessarily fulfill any licensure or continuing education requirements. Most states still require face-to-face interaction.

For more information visit www.jerseyshoretherapy.com.

Are You Seeking Clinical Supervision toward LPC in New Jersey?

This is a follow up post on the new change in the rules for clinical supervision in New Jersey. Beginning in October 2011, the New Jersey Professional Counselors Examiners Committee of the State Board of Marriage and Family Therapy Examiners will require all Supervisors of LACs to hold a Supervisor’s credential from the NBCC. See NJAC 13:34-13.1 and the NBCC Center for Credentialing and Education web site:  http://www.cce-global.org/ACS

I am an Approved Clinical Supervisor by credential and I have supervised many mental health practitioners working toward licensure. Prior to coming to New Jersey, I conducted field supervision and clinical supervision in Georgia. I currently offer clinical supervision in Atlantic Highlands, NJ.

Areas of Expertise

  • Child Welfare/Foster Care/Wrap-Around/In-home service provision
  • Issues related to technology: gaming, internet and cybersex addiction
  • Adult Survivors of Abuse
  • Domestic Violence
  • Infidelity
  • The Use of Technology in Therapy

My Curriculum Vita lists recent publications and professional presentations.

If you are interested in clinical supervision with me, please contact me at info@jerseyshoretherapy.com or email me at 877.773.5591.

The Meaning of Christmas in a Web 2.0 World

This video was shared with me on Facebook and I just had to give it another platform for viewing! Isn’t this great? I can think of many stories from the pages of history and our faiths can be told digitally. Enjoy and have a merry holiday!

The Digital Story of the Nativity

Eminem Promotes Recovery by Sharing his Story!

Ok so I am a little behind the times- his Recovery album has been out for awhile, but I am so glad someone with the influence Eminem has, particularly with our youth- is singing about and talking about recovery.

He was interviewed earlier in the year by Billboard and 60 Minutes.

Video Provided by DatPiff.com

It is good to see people in the world of music who have the ability to reach so many people, use their real life experiences about their struggle with drugs and alcohol use their talent to tell their story and perhaps become an enlightened witness for so many.

His hit single, Not Afraid (see below for video with explicit lyrics dubbed out)  tells about his climb out of the dark place of addiction to being on top of the world and certainly on top of his game. The song speaks of priorities like fatherhood and living clean.

Thanks for sharing, Eminem!
